Natural brown carries a story just as captivating as indigo. It is more than a colour, it is a process where the whole village participates.
Cutting the Branches
It begins with cutting the Maklua tree branches, done carefully so they can grow back for the next harvest.
This cycle is important. It allows the tree to continue giving season after season, without being exhausted.
Harvesting Together
Maklua fruit is seasonal, so everyone in the village come together to harvest it. The Fruits are collected by hand before being shared among people in their community.
Fermentation Process
Once harvested, the maklua fruits are cleaned and left to ferment. Overtime fruit soften and develops its rich brown resin. This step is quiet but essential, allowing the color to slowly build from within.
Preparing the Dye
Before dying, the fermented fruit is pounded into a fine pulp. It is then placed into a mesh bag and moved through water, gently releasing its color. The water slowly turns into a deep brown, ready for dyeing.
From Brown to Black
With each layer of dye, the colour deepens from brown towards almost black. No two pieces ever come out the same. Each result is shaped by small changes in the process.
