The Unseen Hands

In the village, Mae Smai prepares the yarn and hand dyes it with natural indigo. The color slowly shifts from green to deep blue as it reacts with oxygen in the air.

At a time when most people have stopped weaving with natural dyes,
she remains one of the few who continues to devote herself to this traditional way of life.

After being cleaned, the yarn is dipped into an indigo vat that has been used for over ten years. It is twisted, dried, and dyed again two to three times until the color becomes rich and clear.

The finished yarn is then passed on to Mae Wan, the village’s master weaver, the only person who can create the Distorted Indigo technique, using skills refined over a lifetime.
